In July 2026, the Hague System witnessed historic expansion. Within just two weeks, El Salvador (July 7), the Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO, July 10), and the Lao People's Democratic Republic (July 14) successively deposited their instruments of accession to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement, increasing the total number of countries covered by the Hague System from over 90 to 102.
El Salvador's accession took effect on October 7, opening a new channel for design protection in Latin America. The EAPO, as the third regional organization to join, had its accession enter into force on October 10, covering eight Eurasian member states including Armenia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan in a single stroke. Laos, which joined on October 14, became the 85th member of the Hague Union, providing a more convenient design protection path for the ASEAN market.
From now on, applicants will need only file a single international application, use one language, and pay one set of fees to obtain design protection in 102 countries. The efficiency and appeal of the Hague System continue to grow as its membership expands.
