Effective February 27th, the European Patent Office (EPO) has introduced a pilot phase enabling select applicants (participants in the MyEPO Portfolio pilot program) to request certified priority documents electronically instead of in paper format. This initiative aims to streamline access and usage for users. Full rollout of the service to all applicants is planned for late 2025.
Through MyEPO Portfolio, eligible users may now obtain certified copies of European patent applications and PCT applications in electronic format. These digital priority documents will be delivered as ZIP archive files via the Mailbox feature, potentially including applicant-submitted sequence listings where applicable. Paper copies will still be issued if explicitly requested in the "Other" free text field or if applications are submitted through non-MyEPO Portfolio channels.
Notably, electronic certified copies requested via MyEPO Portfolio remain fee-exempt, maintaining the existing cost structure of paper-based requests. This digital transition preserves certification validity while enhancing document accessibility.
